What it does
Bee propolis — antibacterial and soothing
Propolis is a resinous substance that bees produce by blending plant buds, resins, and their own enzymes. In K-beauty it is most recognisable from COSRX Full Fit Propolis Ampoule and Beauty of Joseon's propolis-honey range — both hero products for dull, inflamed, or dehydrated skin. The extract is rich in flavonoids, phenolic acids, and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE). These compounds have antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity. Research supports propolis's use in accelerating wound healing, reducing post-acne inflammation, and supporting ceramide synthesis in compromised skin. Propolis pairs well with centella and niacinamide. The main caveat: a small percentage of people with bee-product allergies may react to it, so patch test before full-face application. Products listing propolis in the top third of the INCI or with a percentage on the label (common in Korean labels) are most likely to deliver meaningful effect.
